Tricks & Treats: We've Got The Scoop On Halloween Happenings

Hands up if you think Halloween is the best holiday ever. There are the costumes, the zero expectations of gifts or crazy overspending, the whimsical, magical atmosphere, the crisp fall air, the candy. It's truly a bewitching time, made all the better by the fantastic smattering of wild and spooky events to mark the occasion.

We've made our way through most of this list over the past four years and have some annual favorites, but there always seem to be new activities worth exploring. Check out the Halloween happenings running through the end of the month and get ready for the candy onslaught.

Oct 18-28 | Battle Creek

Take the family out to Binder Park Zoo for unlimited train, carousel and hay rides. Go down the trick -or-treat trail and visit the wild science zone. Stage shows each evening include magic acts, puppet shows, and DJ dance parties.

Hallowe'en Haunts

Oct 19-20 | Holland

Discover the magic of Victorian Hallowe’en traditions and superstitions at the historic Cappon House. Tour the dimly lit rooms to learn how Hallowe’en was celebrated a hundred years ago, then partake in spooky parlor games and broom races, listen to classic ghost stories, have your fortune told, and carve a mini pumpkin to take home.

Hallowee-Ones at Meijer Gardens

Oct 19 | Grand Rapids

A special event designed for little ones at the Frederik Meijer Gardens. Dress your child as a sculpture, mammal, flower or another costume related to the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden, then partake in a costume parade and Halloween-themed stories.

BOO on Your Bike

Oct 21 | South Haven

Trick or treat along the scenic Kal Haven Trail in South Haven on bike, stroller or foot. Candy, apple cider, doughnuts and free bike helmets for children will be given out. Don't miss the bike rodeo supported by the South Haven Police Department. Free.

Halloween Train Rides

Oct 20-21 | Benton Harbor

Take a moonlit Halloween train ride through Eden Springs Park at House of David to get into the holiday spirit. $3 per person.

Laser Engraved Pumpkins: Fab Lab Worskshop

Oct 20 | Benton Harbor

Come to the Lake Michigan College workshop, pick out a pumpkin and design, and watch the laser engrave it. Choose from over 15 designs. $9 per pumpkin.

Pumpkin Carving Party @ New Holland

Oct 22 | Holland

New Holland Brewing Pub hosts fall family fun on the back patio with plenty of pumpkins to carve and all the needed tools provided free of charge. Grab some dinner and dig in.

Glow in the Park

Oct 26-27 | Saugatuck

Music, food and drinks, as well as lots of fun glow-in the-dark activities for the kids. Come in full glowing costume or get your glow on when you get there with. "Anything that glows goes!" Free admission. Some activities cost money.

Halloween at Van Raalte Farm

Oct 26 | Holland

Start your journey along the trails at the Van Raalte Farm anytime and discover wild creatures, fun activities and treats along a wooded trail. Enjoy cider and a cookie (included in your admission) at the end along with a campfire. Bring a flashlight after dark. $2 per person.

Halloween Spooktacular Oct 26-28 | Paw Paw

The Halloween Spooktacular Magic Show is family friendly and packed with amazing tricks. Come in costume, enjoy Halloween treats and drinks, and prepare to be amazed.

Spooktacular Ballet

Oct 26-28 | Grand Rapids

A uniquely told ballet story about a young boy's mischievous plan to get his older sister's trick or treating candy.

Berrien County Animal Control Fall Festival

Oct 27 | Benton Harbor

Berrien County Animal Control hosts a morning of fall family fun, including a nature walk, cookie decorating, coloring, snacks and a trunk or treat. Plus meet plenty of sweet adoptable pets.

Monsters at the Museum

Oct 27 | Holland

Stop by for trick-or-treating in the Holland Museum exhibits, flashlight tours of the Dutch Galleries, fun games and spooky crafts. A not-so-spooky event especially for children ages 8 and under. Bring a flashlight!

Un-haunted Hike

Oct 27 | West Olive

Dress up and explore the paved trail on family hike. Learn about critters of the season through activity stations along the way. Donuts & cider will be available at the Nature Center. Recommended for ages 3-7, but all ages are welcome. $3 per child.

Halloween Family & Pet Parade

Oct 27 | Saugatuck

A small town tradition with hot cocoa and cookies, costume contests and candy. Parade steps off at 4 pm. Sign up for a fun scavenger hunt afterward!
