What's On This Weekend: Sept 9-11

There seems to be an underlying theme to this weekend's lineup of events: carnivals. Our little corner of Michigan is hosting a back-to-school carnival, a wine harvest carnival, a small-town county fair, antique tractor show carnival, rescue animal carnival, train museum carnival... Of course, plenty of alternative options await those who aren't in the mood for carnival fun and food (is there such a thing?). Just keep reading.


  • Catch a unique glimpse at antique tractors and farm equipment, as well as parades, games, crafts, a flea market at the Michigan Flywheelers Museum in South Haven (through Sunday)

  • Hop on a ride or two, win big at the carnival games and savor the scrumptious food at the Allegan County Fair (Saturday is Children's Day and Sunday is Family Day)

  • Stomp grapes, watch a parade and fireworks, and enjoy carnival games, rides, live music, and local refreshments at the Paw Paw Wine & Harvest Festival (through Sunday)

  • Help the Fennville District Library make a wooden pirate ship play structure

  • Cheer on the pint-sized runners to the finish line during a free 1K dash in Douglas

  • Catch one of the area's last outdoor movies of the season with a showing of "Pan" in quaint Stevensville


  • Get your furry friend fix, see adoptable shelter animals, and enjoy a bounce house, face painting, snacks and more in St Joseph

  • Check out the unbeatable lineup at the family-friendly, one-day IRock Jazz Fest in Holland

  • Enjoy frisbee tic tac toe, an obstacle course, doughnut eating contest, face painting, a train whistle craft and more at the New Buffalo Railroad Museum's free Family Fun Day

  • Take a horse-drawn trolley ride through the picture-perfect streets of St Joseph

  • Savor the harvest celebration at Lemon Creek Winery in Berrien Springs, with live music, arts and crafts, food and fun for the whole family

  • Watch your budding artist create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece at the Curious Kids' Museum's Van Gogh-themed Super Saturday in St Joseph

  • Celebrate the new school year with a fun-filled Back-to-School Carnival at the library in Mattawan

  • Enjoy an evening of enchanting illusions set to familiar symphonic classics in Benton Harbor


  • Bring the grandparents out to Stokes Homestead in Grand Junction for a special treat and plenty of fun activities for all generations

  • Mark the return of Bell's Octoberfest beer with a family-friendly afternoon of German food, music and ales

  • Stretch and relax during a session of family yoga, music, stories and games at Niles' Fernwood Botanical Gardender children that delves into the fundamentals of yoga in a playful manner.
