Last-Minute Costume Ideas {Part 2}: Let's DIY This!

To read about my annual Halloween costume plight and see a way adorable mini-Audrey, here you go :) We took the same commitment issue, subtracted the little black dress and scavenged around the house to come up with three easy peasy DIY costumes. Pineapple. Nuff said. Also this dress pulled double duty as an emoji costume this week. If you have girls, you probably have fairy wings, tulle skirts and tiaras aplenty. Rosie Revere is one of our favorite books, and this makes a great alternative to the frilly princess costumes. The end. Get out there and Halloween it up, friends!

What's On This Weekend {Halloween Edition}: October 27-29

Have I mentioned how much we love Halloween in our house? Of course I have. Five days out from Halloween, the kids have already eaten their respective weights in candy and worn no fewer than half a dozen different costumes. However, the best is truly saved for last, and this weekend is shaping up to be the perfectly gloomy fall backdrop to haunted, treat-dotted nature trails and cozy indoor parties. Read on for the weekend's Halloween happenings. Have a magical one! FRIDAY Walk along the non-scary trails at the Van Raalte Farm anytime to discover wild creatures, fun activities and treats before enjoying cider and cookies Discover the magic of old Halloween traditions at Holland's Cappon Hous

Last-Minute Costume Ideas: Let's DIY This!

Raise your hand if your kids change their minds about what they want to be for Halloween more often than the October temps oscillate from beach weather to snow. Oh good. I feel better. I seriously envy parents who can make or order their kids' costumes four months in advance with confidence, knowing full well that it is still going to be the costume of choice when Halloween rolls around. That is not my kids. Because the tiny Audrey Hepburn costume is a perennial parent favorite. I painstakingly -- well it took about 20 minutes and $2, but still -- made my youngest the cutest flamingo costume last year at her request, only to have her irrational 2-year-old self lose her marbles when I finishe

Halloween Craft: Make Pretty Spottled Pumpkins

It might be a stretch to say that we nailed this DIY holiday activity from Color Made Happy, but it was reaaaaaaally fun and we got some pretty fabulous decorations out of it. Not too shabby for some free pumpkins (thanks, nice farmers' market vendor!) and $6 worth of nail polish from the dollar store. We did it outside in case things got messy, which turned out to be unnecessary. Grab your pumpkins and nail polish, and a container of room temperature water with plenty of space to submerge your pumpkins. Open the polish and shake the brush close to the water. The color will spread on the surface, unless you're holding it too far away from the water, in which case it will sink to the bottom.

What's On This Weekend: October 20-22

There is really no justification for how much I adore Halloween. I mean, there is the boatloads of candy that my children bring home that I can pilfer at will (give me all the Reese's). And the ridiculously adorable costumes. And the glorious fall weather, except our first year back in Michigan when it snowed during trick or treating hours. So dress your little goblins up and head out for a spectacular weekend of candy-getting. Have fun, friends! FRIDAY Head to Binder Park Zoo for unlimited hayrides, carousel and train rides, life-sized games and the trick or treat trail (through Oct 22) Discover the magic of old Halloween traditions at Holland's Cappon House, with mini pumpkin carving, lawn

Fall Recipe: Deliciously Pink Slow-Cooker Applesauce

Originally posted in 10/2016 With just two ingredients (one of them is water) and three steps, this isn't even really a recipe, but it's definitely worth having in your culinary repertoire. I got the basics from a local mom friend who is a whiz in the kitchen, and she emphasized the use of Jonathan apples. Of course I only had Honeycrisps on hand the first time around, but it wasn't nearly as pretty or sweet as when I made it with the aforementioned Jonathans. Also, I added the slow cooker part because I'm lazy and it's easy. So go ahead and put all those freshly picked apples to good use. You won't regret it. DELICIOUSLY PINK SLOW COOKER APPLESAUCE Makes: about 3-4 cups of applesauce INGRED
