What's On This Weekend: Jan 27-29

The little rectangle for Friday was blank, which was fortunate because I was crazy busy all morning and didn't have a chance to sit down and look until the day had past. But check out all the fun stuff to do on Saturday -- and that's with a few no-snow cancellations. I'm partial to the owls, puzzles and indoor rollerskating, although probably the nice thing to do would be to ask my kids for their input. Hopefully they'll do the right thing and pick owls, puzzles and roller-skates. Enjoy this last bit of January, folks! SATURDAY Enlist in a one-day boot camp to create a customized Minecraft game in Zeeland Enjoy an Olivia-themed story time at the Niles District Library, plus a snack, craft an

6 Ways To Beat The Midwinter Blues

This winter has been...bizarre. It's been crazy foggy, there hasn't been snow on the ground in ages, but at the same time it feels like it has snowed a ton (nonstop for days at random intervals). Our winter routine of sledding on the daily has been dashed, so we've had to come up with a handful of different ways to get us through these last temperamental weeks of Old Man Winter. You're welcome. 1. Go for a swim The Holland Aquatic Center or Surfari Joe's are both fantastic places to spend a day in the water, depending on your budget and ambitions. You can also check out the Y, your nearest wellness center or check into a hotel nearby and invite a few friends over for some swim time and pizza

What's On This Weekend: Jan 20-22

Beyond the Books: Head To Your Local Library For Non-Storytime Fun

If you have procreated, odds are good that you are familiar with the story hour at your nearest library. Particularly if you are a stay-at-home parent, and doubly so if it's the dead of winter, you've probably got a standing date with your local librarian. But -- pardon me if you already are aware of this next little tidbit -- libraries have stepped up their games big time and created a delightful array of programs to draw in kids and their keepers. Spoiler alert: LEGOS! So banish any lingering thoughts of stuffy stacks and check out (couldn't resist) the following offerings: Family Movie Night @ the Regent Theater/Allegan District Library The Allegan library has teamed up with the Regen

What's On This Weekend: Jan 13-15

There's not a whole lot going on this weekend, which means one thing. Well, it means many things, including that it's early January in the Midwest, but it also is a prime opportunity for one of our most favoritest things: Yes Day. My husband and I love Yes Day almost as much as the kids do. It gives us a chance to loosen the rules up a little and simply have fun. It's great. Yes, they choose cookies for breakfast, but that's not going to kill anyone and they might surprise you, like mine did, by asking for actual vegetables for dinner. Happy to oblige! Take 'em bowling, head to Chuck E Cheese, collect beach glass, devour ice cream, let them wear a princess dress to bed, let them skip their

Easy Peasy Winter Bird Feeder

Thursday was National Bird Day, so we celebrated by making a few super simple winter bird feeders. It kept the littles busy for a good while and doubled as an act of kindness toward our feathered friends -- a win all around. Let us know if you make one! INGREDIENTS 1/2 c coconut oil 2 tbsp all-natural peanut butter (no salt or sugar added) 2 c bird seed INSTRUCTIONS Soften coconut oil in microwave until almost completely liquid Stir in peanut butter and add bird seed Place cookie cutters on baking sheet and fill with bird seed mixture, pressing down firmly; use a straw to make a whole for the string Freeze for at least one hour Remove cookie cutter carefully and tie string through hole Hang
